My ANA Business Class Tokyo to Washington flight was a spectacular experience in delectable food and Japanese hospitality. Its not often that I meet cabin crew that are interested in sharing the cultural nuances of a traditional meal, all while ensuring my safety and comfort. The ANA crew on this flight elevated my experience from great to wow!

ANA BUSINESS CLASS – BOARDING AND SEATS

After a quick bite and a shower in the chic ANA lounge in Tokyo Narita (NRT), I headed to gate 54 for my flight to Washington DC (IAD). Priority boarding was announced shortly and we were on our way!

This was my first flight on the ANA 777-300 and I did not know what to expect in terms of cabin quality. The cabin on first glance did look a little dated, especially since I had just completed a segment in the ANA Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner from Bangkok to Narita. The seats on the 777-300 however, were well maintained and offered an excellent hard product.

Business class cabin on the flight was full and I was not able to secure a ‘window seat’. The seats offered direct aisle access but made window views a tad difficult. The storage space and stretch room was incredible though. A pillow, mattress, blanket, headphones and slippers were already placed on the seat.

Shortly after I had settled into my seat, a crew member came to welcome me and asked for my welcome drink preference. I opted for a local white wine and was a bit surprised to see it being served in a plastic cup.

It does seem tacky but I love the ANA ground crew that make an effort to wave goodbye to each of their flights – a classy touch!

Food and Cabin Service

Shortly after take-off, the crew came by with the first wave of food and beverage service. I say wave because the first 2 hours of the flight was pure gluttony!

The menu included a pre-set multiple course option of International cuisine and traditional Japanese cuisine (Washoku). The crew was polite to ask if I had ever tried a Washoku and mentioned that it was their recommended course that doubles as a cultural experience. I was was already impressed with the crew’s initiative and wanted to experience a Washoku, on an ANA flight nonetheless  🙂

Since I expressed interest, the crew member accompanied each course with a description of the ingredient and also the best way to pair/mix ingredients to enjoy the flavors. Best cabin service ever.

Stuffed and content, I was ready to stretch out with a movie and hopefully catch some sleep. The ANA seat mattress offered the right amount of bedding to sink into.

The second meal of the flight had a dedicated breakfast menu and included a Washoku and an international cuisine. Unfortunately, I was still stuffed from the first round of gluttony and had to skip the meal.

ANA business class also offered a ‘Light Dishes Anytime’ menu which was handy. Since I had skipped the second meal, I ordered a Japanese Pizza a couple of hours before landing.

As I browsed the extensive entertainment offering, I came across this interesting section with some quirky videos – “Three ways to avoid trouble overseas”.

Shortly after the final meal and a drink for the road, we landed at IAD. While the service and my ANA business class experience was impeccable, my experience at IAD was less than impressive – TSA broke into my luggage and damaged it!

Take Away

This was my first time flying the ~12.5 hour flight on ANA business class Tokyo to Washington, and I was impressed with ANA’s efficiency and stellar crew at hand. If you haven’t had a chance to experience ANA’s business class cabin, I would definitely recommend it. Great value when booking with Aeroplan at 75K miles.

Not sure when this was written but I am considering ANA from DC to Shanghai and your description helps alot. We have flown business often and one of the best was Hainan Air; United is ok. We want to fly as fast as possible and reasonably priced; ANA looks pretty good so thanks for your comments and photos.

Thanks for dropping a line Michael! I wrote this back in 2017. If you are looking to do this in the next couple of months, the flight would still be 777-300ER as in the post. I have flown ANA a couple of time since and as with anything Japanese, the service and the quality are top-notch each time!
