Yesterday we heard about the horror on Jet Airways flight 9W 697, flying from Mumbai to Jaipur. The flight was forced to return to Mumbai after a critical decline in cabin pressure which resulted in several passengers experiencing ear/nose bleeds and headaches. The sharp decline in cabin pressure was reported to be human error, in which the cockpit crew forgot to switch on the cabin air pressure control. 171 people on board, about 30 suffered ear and nose bleeds.
According to follow up reports on the incident, one of the 5 passengers taken to hospital for treatment is now demanding 30 Lakh Rupees (~40,000 USD) and 100 upgrade vouchers as compensation, alleging that the airline failed to provide him with proper care in-flight. Apparently, he has also threatened to share the video of the flight incident if his demands are not met. Wow.
Look, I am all for holding airlines responsible but this seems more like a blackmail than a compensation claim. 100 upgrade vouchers?? LOL. He seems appalled by the treatment but not enough to boycott Jet Airways. Having said that, recent court verdicts from India, in favor of passengers, could have something to do with this outlandish demand.
What do you think? Is the Jet Airways passenger demands fair or bizarre?

Any respectable airline, with a pro-active CEO, and good PR skills, would have offered all passengers compensation (a free ticket or a 50% voucher) for such an horrific event, which was the airline’s fault. Would love to know what happened to the cockpit crew (action)? Do you think their nosebleed came after landing!!
Yes, in US there would be a class action and lawyers lined up to take the case. I hope there was a medical emergency team available on landing, and JA compensated all medical costs.
Agreed. Not much available in terms of how the airlines plans to compensate them. But reports do mention that passengers were given full medical follow up and even hotel stays until next flight etc. our friend here is being proactive with his demands 😉
There will def be cases filed and several thousands $$ given out in compensation. Not so sure I will be looking for upgrade vouchers though – ha!
I’m sure if this happened in the US, he’d simply be asking for $1,000,000, no vouchers required.
Considering that this was negligence which could have caused serious injury, I think this passenger is right. I would not side with him if this was a well managed emergency.
$40k i can understand but 100 upgrade vouchers?! Haha..
