Air Canada and Air China have had a patchy relationship when it comes to booking awards through their loyalty programs. Apparently, CA was collecting YQ on AC award bookings but Aeroplan was not. So now, Aeroplan has decided to collect fuel surcharges (YQ) on Air China award tickets as well. But this is not bad news for everyone, as things stand, Aeroplan is charging YQ on Air China award bookings only to/from Canada!! Not sure if this is a glitch but all award bookings to/from US are still showing without fuel surcharges. For my Canadian friends though, the YQ has been instated for good. Canada-China relations take another hit 😉
If you have plans of flying Air China, I recommend you route to/from US and book right away – Do it now, this wont last long!! Without further adieu, I will let screenshots do the talking;
Booking Air China with Aeroplan – to/from Canada (YQ added)
Booking Air China with Aeroplan – to/from US (YQ not added)
Take Away
I can confirm that Aeroplan is collecting YQ on Air China bookings. However, this appears to be a glitch that the system is not coding the YQ for flights booked to/from US. Book now if you have plans!!

Fuel surcharges are the bane of our existence. 🙁
