Emirates has launched its first refurbished Boeing 777, which began service today on flight EK83 from Dubai (DXB) to Geneva (GVA). The extensive refurbishment project, completed in just 37 days, introduces new cabin features across all classes, including the new Emirates Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy.
New Emirates Business Class
The Business Class cabin now offers 38 seats arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration, providing each passenger with direct aisle access. The redesigned seats, inspired by the light and airy design elements of Emirates’ A380 cabins, are 20.7 inches wide and can be converted into a flatbed up to 78.6 inches long. Features include a personal mini-bar, multiple device charging outlets, and a 23-inch HD screen for in-flight entertainment.
Introduction of Premium Economy
For the first time on its 777 aircraft, Emirates has introduced a Premium Economy class. The new cabin consists of 24 seats arranged in a 2-4-2 configuration. The seats offer enhanced comfort with a 38-inch pitch, 19.5-inch width, and an 8-inch recline. Passengers will benefit from cream leather seats with wood panel finishings and six-way adjustable headrests.
New Emirates Economy Class
The Economy Class cabin features 256 ergonomically designed seats in a soft greys and blues palette. The seats have full leather headrests and flexible side panels that can be adjusted for optimal support.
Refurbishment and Future Plans
As per the Emirates media release, the refurbishment was a significant undertaking involving the removal and reinstallation of cabin interiors by a dedicated team of 175 engineers and technicians. The process used 330 square meters of carpets, 340 laminate sheets, 8,000 square feet of leather, 800 meters of fabric, and 300 litres of paint. The first aircraft took 18,000 person-hours to complete. A stunning timelapse video of the transformation can be found here.
Emirates plans to refurbish an additional 80 Boeing 777s as part of a $3 billion investment to enhance customer experience. The airline’s retrofit program will eventually encompass 191 Boeing 777 and Airbus A380 aircraft, installing thousands of new seats across all classes. The refurbished aircraft will soon be deployed on routes to Tokyo, Haneda, and Brussels, with more destinations to be announced.
It’s a beautiful start to a few years of stunning new airline products and revamped premium cabins lined up for aviation enthusiasts. Emirates has taken the lead in bringing innovative cabins; others, like Air India, Lufthansa, Qantas, etc., are not far behind.
