You may have heard of the all-new Rogers Red World Legend Mastercard. The name sounds impressive, but does the card live up to it?

Mastercard has long lacked a true competitor to Visa Infinite Privilege in Canada. Launching it first with Rogers, however, is an interesting choice.

An Overview: The Rogers Red World Legend Mastercard

The Rogers Red World Legend Mastercard is a cashback card. It earns 2% cashback globally for Rogers customers in exchange for a $495 annual fee. If you aren’t a Rogers customer, the cashback rate drops to 1.5%.

There are other perks, including:

  • 1.5x redemption bonus when used against Rogers purchases
    • Effectively, 3% cash back if you are a Rogers customer and redeem it against a Rogers bill
  • No Foreign Transaction Fees
  • 10 Roam Like Home days
  • $200 Rogers Entertainment Credit
  • Six Plaza Premium Passes
  • Soho Friends account

It’s Mastercard’s only metal card in Canada and it currently has no welcome bonus.

The $200 Rogers Entertainment Credit is only eligible for TV-related Rogers services, such as cable TV, subscription services, or one-time purchases like pay-per-view and movies. Rogers home internet, mobile phone plans, and smart home monitoring are excluded.

Soho House is a club membership program designed for travel and lifestyle. With the entry-level tier Soho Friends membership, you can book Soho House properties around the world at discounted rates and also receive invitations to affiliated restaurants, spas, and the like.

Most credit cards have 1-3 core reasons to hold the card and a list of “nice to haves”. Looking at the Rogers Red World Legend Mastercard, I struggle to identify the core reasons.

The most compelling reason is the effective 3% cashback if redeemed against a Rogers bill. But the Rogers Red World Elite Mastercard already offers that benefit with no annual fee.

The 10 Roam Like Home days are worth at most $180, assuming $18 per day outside the United States. Compared to the no-fee Rogers Red World Elite Mastercard, you only gain 5 extra days. That reduces the incremental value to $90 against a $495 annual fee. In many cases, a travel eSIM will provide cheaper data anyway. The final kicker is true road warriors with Rogers are likely on the 64-country roaming-included mobile plan and have little use for Roam Like Home.

Switching gears to the card’s travel benefits, 6 Plaza Premium passes are nice, but the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite offers 6 lounge visits at a $150 annual fee. A more direct competitor to this World Legend card is the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite Privilege, and that offers a whopping 10 lounge visits and a $250 easy-to-use travel credit, making its effective annual fee $349, quite a bit lower than Rogers’ $495. Did I mention that both Scotia Passport cards also have no foreign transaction fees (just like this Rogers card)?

To really justify the annual fee, you need to be using the $200 Rogers Entertainment Credit. This card works best if you’re deeply ingrained in the Rogers ecosystem. Specifically, if you already pay for cable or Sportsnet+, Discovery+, and/or Citytv+ with Rogers.

As for Soho Friends, the face value is $130 USD and the real value depends on how often you’ll travel with Solo House.

Takeaway

The Rogers Red World Legend Mastercard is the first World Legend card to launch in Canada. Its primary audience is someone deeply invested in the Rogers ecosystem who can make the most of the 10 Roam Like Home days and the $200 Rogers Entertainment Credit. The card is also compelling if you value access to Soho Friends.

Otherwise, Rogers mobile customers seeking the effective 3% cashback should consider the no-annual-fee Rogers Red World Elite Mastercard instead.

If lounge access and 0% foreign transaction fees are a priority, a Scotiabank Passport card is the better choice. Even the $150 Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite includes 6 lounge passes and 0% foreign transaction fees, matching Rogers’ $495 card.
