What is an eSIM?

An eSIM, or embedded SIM, is a digital version of the traditional physical SIM card. Instead of inserting a tiny chip into your phone, the eSIM is built into it. This technology lets users activate mobile data plans without handling physical SIM cards. eSIMs are compatible with various devices, including smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and even some vehicles.

How Does an eSIM Work?

An eSIM functions similarly to a physical SIM card, providing access to cellular networks so you can make calls, send texts, and use mobile data. The key difference is that eSIMs use preinstalled software to manage the connection to these networks. Once activated through your device’s settings or via an app, the eSIM links you to the carrier of your choice.

Switching between mobile plans or carriers is a seamless process with an eSIM, as it can store multiple profiles. For instance, you could have one profile for your local carrier and another for an international carrier when you travel. You can switch between these profiles without having to swap SIM cards physically.

Why Should You Use an eSIM?

The flexibility of eSIMs makes them especially useful for travellers. Gone are the days of seeking out cell phone booths at every airport to activate a local SIM. eSIM services allow you to buy local or global data plans without paying high roaming fees from your home carrier. You can also keep your regular SIM for everyday use while using an eSIM to handle data in a foreign country, allowing you to switch between numbers and carriers without hassle. Again, gone are the days of losing your ‘home SIM card’ in a bag full of other SIM cards bought in every country visited. It has happened to me more times than I would care to admit 🙂

Saily eSIM – Features and Benefits

Saily eSIM is developed by Nord Security, the company behind NordVPN. While there are many eSIM providers, Saily stands out for its user-friendly app and extensive global coverage. Here are some key features of using Saily eSIM for your travel needs:

  1. Wide Coverage: Saily offers data plans in over 150 countries, ensuring you stay connected while travelling locally or abroad.
  2. Flexible Data Plans: With 1GB to 20GB options, Saily’s plans are suitable for short trips or extended stays. They’re also competitively priced, with some plans starting at $2.99.
  3. Easy Activation: You can activate the Saily eSIM by downloading their app, purchasing a data plan, and following the setup instructions.
  4. Multi-Operator Support: Saily uses a multi-operator network system to switch between different network providers to ensure optimal coverage and speed during your travels.
  5. Trusted Brand name: The eSIM market has exploded, and it’s hard to determine which ones are trustworthy, leaving word of mouth as the only way to judge. As a Nord Security product (the same as NordVPN), Saily comes with a recognizable brand name, giving users peace of mind regarding the safety of their connection.
Saily eSIM plans

Saily plans are available for over 180 countries

To get the best data experience, I would recommend buying country-specific plans. Here is a small sample of popular country-specific plans;

  • United States – starting at $3.99 for 1GB (7 days)
  • Thailand – starting at $2.99 for 1GB (7 days)
  • India – starting at $3.99 for 1GB (7 days)
  • UAE – starting at $3.99 for 1GB (7 days)
  • Turkey – starting at $3.99 for 1GB (7 days)
  • France – starting at $3.99 for 1GB (7 days)

Get the Saily app, install your eSIM (the app will take you through the steps), and you’re all set. I recommend activating your eSIM data plan before hopping on the flight so that you have data as soon as you land. I will post a detailed account of the setup and eSIM data experience in a few weeks as I travel across Asia.

Takeaway

eSIMs are a convenient solution for managing mobile connectivity, especially for frequent travellers. With options like Saily, getting reliable and affordable data while travelling has never been easier. Whether you’re planning a short trip or an extended stay, Saily’s flexible data plans and strong network coverage make it a reliable option for staying connected while on the move.

Saily was priced right, BUT its auto-configuration in my phone was BAD. I repeatedly had to manually type in Access Point details. I did NOT have this problem on a prevfious trip using Saily’s competitor Airalo. YMMV but I’ve a firm opinion that Airalo works better and even if priced higher, I value the convenience. I’m not afraid of techy details, but they’re a nuisance and could be daunting for the tech-challenged traveller.

If you are really interested in better deals, then here is the list:
Eskimo will sell you 1 GB for virtually any country around the world for $4, cheaper per GB is you buy a bigger package – but it is valid for 2 YEARS, so that’s better than 7 days. When you sign up as a first time user you get an extra 500 mb plus 1 gb of global data valid for 2 years for free using codes.
Yolo Global – will sell you 7 day 1 GB packages for many countries for between $0.89 – $2, they also have 0.5gb packages for 1 day for $0.39.
Roamless is pay as you go – money never expires, and European rates start at $2.45 per GB, Thailand $2.95 – again no expiration. They also have lots of coupon codes which will give you like $6 to start.
Mobimatter consolidates a lot of packages for different amounts of data and duration of usage – very good prices.

are you getting a commission for this? must be disclosed clearly rather than having a general statement in every post. In any case, I never saw your blog before, just clicked through the standard BA page but if you do your blog like this, suggesting something not competitive as competitive because you earn an extra commission, I don’t think you can have a large readership

Did you choose to not read the disclaimer right up top? Thanks for stumbling upon the blog. Why do you think Saily is not competitive?

That is not a good deal, and most likely a paid promotion. Google esim plans to find much much better deals – like less then $1 per GB

Are you talking about Google Fi? Great, but not available outside US. Restrictive.
