Air Canada has expanded its long-standing partnership with Lufthansa by introducing a new codeshare on Lufthansa Express Rail services operated by Deutsche Bahn. This enhanced intermodal codeshare will now offer convenient rail connections for passengers travelling to Frankfurt (FRA) and beyond. Intermodal is an interconnected journey that spans air, land, and sea, providing access to destinations beyond local airports.
Air Canada Rail connectivity – Lufthansa Express Rail
FRA is a key European hub for Air Canada, with up to five flights daily (from YVR, YYZ, and YUL) to the city in 2025. With this expanded partnership, travellers flying into or out of FRA with Air Canada can now connect directly to up to 24 German cities via high-speed Deutsche Bahn trains under a single reservation. The new codeshare builds upon Air Canada’s existing intermodal interlining agreement with Lufthansa Express Rail and complements the Deutsche Bahn Rail&Fly product already available to travellers.
Air Canada’s intermodal partnerships now span eight countries in Europe and Asia, integrating with both rail and bus operators. Passengers booking their travel through Air Canada can now create itineraries that include both their flight and onward rail travel within Germany. The ability to book both air and rail segments on a single ticket eliminates the complexity of managing separate reservations and schedules. It comes with a transfer guarantee, which includes support and rebooking assistance in case of delays or travel disruptions.
Takeaway
Since 2023, Air Canada has introduced air-to-rail booking options at airports in France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the UK, Italy, Spain, and even South Korea! Air Canada rail connections in Europe unlock the possibilities of exploring the region without having to transit multiple domestic airports, and managing flights and rail bookings all under a single reservation. Currently, Aeroplan points cannot be used towards intermodal bookings.
