I love New York city and all things tourist that come with it. Andaz New York properties have been on my wish list for a while. On my last trip to the city, I finally checked off Andaz 5th Avenue from my list. Given the prime location of the property, it tends to be priced higher (~$350/nt) during peak tourist season. Andaz 5th is a category 6 redemption, available for 25000 points/nt or 12500 + $150. I was able to book the points+cash redemption for two nights and also used discounted Hyatt e-gift card (~20% cheaper via CardCash) towards the cash portion of my booking.
Andaz New York – Location Location Location!
Andaz New York has two locations, Wall Street and 5th Avenue. Andaz 5th Avenue could not be better placed for a tourist in town, right across from the New York public library, a stones throw from Bryant Park and an easy walk to several tourist hot spots in mid-town, Manhattan.
The main entrance, much like the hotel property is unassuming and has a chic and yet casual vibe.
Once through the doors, we were greeted warmly by an associate and offered a welcome drink – I chose a bottle of water. The check-in process was quick and easy. While I was unable to lock down a diamond suite upgrade (non-availibity), they were able to find me a superior room with a view. We were assigned room 901.
Room 901
Overall, room 901 was well appointed, spacious (NYC standards) and offered great views of the New York Public Library and 41st street.
The room did not come with a coffee machine. I called to request one and was offered free coffee service to the room (upon request) or a coffee machine setup in the room. I like to have my coffee really early in the morning or late at nights, so we opted for a coffee machine to be setup in the room.
The Nespresso machine was perfect for a bedside corner and also came with super cool coffee glasses.
The bathroom was excusite with modern fixtures – featured standing shower, double sinks with glass fixtures and an elegant mirror.
The full length see-through glass closet was easy on the eyes but deadly for my fingers. Kept jamming my fingers into the glass exterior because it was really-see-thru.
As with all Andaz properties, snacks and non alcoholic beverages were complimentary. The snack selection included popcorn and chocolate bar with nuts. The alcoholic selection was less than inspiring.
The views from the room were definitely the highlight of my stay, it really made me feel nestled within the city skyline.
Perched up on the window ledge with morning coffee in hand, ‘people-watching’ was relaxing and a great start to the day.
Breakfast
Diamond breakfast at Andaz 5th was restricted to one entree, juice and coffee per person. I found it rather odd that it was restricted by food item and not an amount. Breakfast is served in the hotel restaurant – The Shop, which is located on the ground floor and offers good view of the hustle and bustle on 41st street.
We were joined by family for breakfast. The staff at The Shop were very attentive and were also able to accommodate special requests on our order. My wife ordered a vegan version of the skillet hash alongside the avocado toast (together as one entree π ) The french toast, omelette and huevos rancheros were all delicious!
Final thoughts
Andaz 5th avenue definitely lives up to its reputation and holds the Andaz brand in good light. The location is one of its strongest suit. If you are a tourist in town, its hard to do better in terms of location and value.
There is no better time to be in New York city than Spring. If you have a trip coming up, or are planning one, I highly recommend The New York Pass – a sightseeing card that offers entry to over 90 attractions in New York City for one great price. It also allows you to skip lines at some of the busiest tourist attractions, and includes the Big Bus hop-on hop-off service. Visiting New York city is not cheap on the pocket and The New York Pass can save you upto 70% on sightseeing costs.
