While we talk extensively about how to use Aeroplan to book premium cabin flights, we have yet to discuss an alternative redemption: redeem Aeroplan for hotel stays.

It doesn’t immediately come to mind when redeeming points, but it is a growing redemption category for Aeroplan. Let’s look at how much value you can extract and whether it’s actually worth redeeming Aeroplan points for accommodation.

How do Aeroplan Hotel Redemptions Work

Put simply, it’s redeeming your Aeroplan points for a hotel stay through the Aeroplan portal. Aeroplan makes it pretty simple: you can pay entirely with points, entirely with cash, or split the cost 50/50. The split must be exactly 50/50 — you can’t customize it to something like 80/20.

When you search on Aeroplan, you can toggle between all Points, Points + Cash, and full Cash.

Aeroplan treats hotel stays booked through its platform as third-party bookings, so you won’t receive elite benefits or earn elite nights. Therefore, it’s best for boutique hotels or when you’re not chasing hotel status.

Resort fees, when applicable, must be paid at the hotel and cannot be covered with points. You’ll also have a choice of rates, with the main differences being breakfast and the cancellation policy.

You’ll earn Aeroplan points on cash bookings, with bonuses based on elite status. You’ll earn 1 SQC for every 5 base Aeroplan points earned, which can help if you’re working toward elite status.

Aeroplan HotelSavers

HotelSavers assigns participating hotels to categories and uses a fixed award chart to price redemptions.

These are almost always a better value than non-HotelSavers hotels. For example, looking at a 1-night stay in Toronto mid-March, the Park Hyatt Toronto comes out to 0.73 cents per point for a base room.

Conversely, consider a 1-night booking at the Kimpton SAINT GEORGE HOTEL, which belongs to HotelSavers category 5, and achieves a 1.02 CPP.

Fourth Night Free

Like Marriott Bonvoy’s 5th night free when paying with points, Aeroplan offers 4th night free for Aeroplan co-branded credit card holders. You must book by December 31, 2026, although you can complete the stay after that date.

Fairmont Royal York: Combine HotelSavers with 4th night free

Combining 4th night free with HotelSavers can make a significant impact. In the example above, redeeming Aeroplan points yields a CPP of 1.8. This is much better than 0.73 with no HotelSavers and 1.02 with only HotelSavers.

Limited Time Points Back Promos

Every now and then, Aeroplan runs promotions that offer a portion of points back when redeeming a minimum amount. Right now, you can receive 10,000 points back if redeeming at least 50,000 points with promo code HOTEL0226. You must book by March 8 and complete your stay by December 31, 2026.

Be sure to enter the promo code at checkout. The system should apply the discount to the final price immediately.

This is equivalent to 20% back and can be very good when combined with HotelSavers and 4th night free.

HotelSavers + 4th Night Free + Points Back Promo

Combining HotelSavers with 4th night free and a points back promo is the best way to use your Aeroplan points for hotel redemptions. Consider the MUU hotel in Bangkok for 4 nights over Christmas Day. After entering HOTEL0226 on the checkout screen, the final price in points is 47,600.

In cash, the price is $1,097 CAD, making a CPP of 2.3.

I personally value Aeroplan at around 2.1 cents per point, so this would be a “worth it” redemption. Admittedly, I had to search quite a bit to find something this good. In the past, Aeroplan has also offered 15,000 points back when redeeming at least 60,000 points. This would be equivalent to 25% back, which is better than the current promo.

Takeaway

Hotel stays probably aren’t the first thing that comes to mind when you redeem Aeroplan points. However, combining HotelSavers with 4th Night Free by holding a co-branded credit card and a points-back promotion can turn it into a worthwhile redemption.
