SPG 35% discount

You can maximize on the sale by purchasing up to 30,000 starpoints for $682.50 USD (2.275 cpp)SPG limits purchase up to 30,000 per account per calendar year. Note that Starpoints purchased do not count toward elite status.

SPG 35% discount

Starpoint purchases can be made by members whose accounts have been active for a minimum of 14 days. Accounts that are less than the required 14 days in age will have the purchase attempt cancelled.

How to leverage the discount further

SPG points transfer 1:1 to several airline miles with 5K bonus on every 20K transferred. You can further leverage this sale by transferring purchased starpoints to airline programs that maybe running conversion bonus offers – Aeroplan routinely offers 35% bonus on hotel points transfers.

More importantly, SPG transfers to Marriott 1:3 and you can really scale this promotion, like I did when I converted 90K starpoints into 150K Aeroplan + 7 night Marriott certificate (Note: Marriott Travel Packages no longer count towards Aeroplan bonuses). Without the Aeroplan bonus, I find it best to transfer Marriott travel packages towards Alaska Airlines. Each person will have to crunch the numbers and decide what airline transfer parter works best for them.

If you have already purchased 30K points this year, you could avail another option of gifting additional points to other accounts and then transferring them to your primary account. The transfer is free as long as the address on the accounts match (30 day minimum) 🙂. This is a good way to purchase lots of airline miles if you have a specific redemption in mind.

I don’t recommend buying points just to fatten your account balance. However, with a specific use in mind this promotion can be very handy. Golden rule is to not purchase points unless you plan to use it within a calendar year.

Other Important notes about the promotion

  • Going into August, towards the Marriott/SPG integration – Unused Marriott certificates would be converted to points (conversion unknown). Best to plan accordingly.
  • All SPG points in account will be converted to Marriott by 1:3 conversion rate.
  • Purchased points do not count towards elite status
  • Starpoint purchases can be made by members whose accounts have been active for a minimum of 14 days. Accounts that are less than the required 14 days in age will have the purchase attempt cancelled.
