Introduction & Booking

Duluth, Minnesota is a vibrant port city on Lake Superior’s western tip, known for its abundant outdoor recreation like hiking and biking, as well as it’s stunning lake views and local breweries. It’s also home to the flagship Duluth Trading Company store.

Duluth, MN – view from my room

I had never been to Duluth before, but on November 10, I stopped in for a night during a cross-country road trip from Toronto to Vancouver, and booked the Sheraton Duluth Hotel just three hours before checking in. The stay came to $297 CAD. I chose to pay cash rather than redeem points since this was simply an overnight stop (about 10 hours total) and I wanted to earn the points instead. I could have secured a better rate by booking earlier, but I wanted this road trip to stay flexible and spontaneous, without committing to set stops. While this price isn’t what I’d typically pay, it was worth it for a comfortable, hassle-free night.

I initially booked a Traditional Room, Two Doubles but was upgraded upon arrival to a Deluxe Lakeview Suite thanks to my Marriott Platinum Elite status.

Location & Arrival

I wish I’d had more time to explore because the hotel is perfectly situated in downtown Duluth with a beautiful waterfront setting. Shops and restaurants line the surrounding streets, and the Duluth Trading Company store sits directly across from the hotel entrance.

The lobby was warm and inviting, with a large front desk and quick, attentive service, helped by the fact that it was quiet when I arrived at 9pm. Just off the lobby is Restaurant 301, which offers bar seating and a casual dining area. I had dinner there out of convenience, a chicken, avocado and cheese sandwich. The food wasn’t particularly impressive, but after a long day on the road, it did the job. With more time and energy, I would have ventured out to the many nearby restaurants downtown.

The upgraded suite was comfortable and well-appointed. It wasn’t overly large, but it had plenty of space for two people. The highlight was easily the view of Lake Superior, especially during sunrise – calm, expansive, and stunning, even in November.

The room included two double beds, a small seating area, a table and chair, a closet, a TV, and a decently sized bathroom with a stand-up shower and vanity stocked with essentials. It was also conveniently located just a few feet down the hall from the Club Lounge.

Club Lounge

As a Platinum Elite Marriott member, I had access to the sixth-floor club lounge. The offerings were basic but convenient: chips, candy, and fruit (apples and bananas) available 24/7, plus a simple breakfast selection of hard-boiled eggs, scrambled eggs, toast, bacon, cereal, oatmeal, yogurt, pastries, and standard beverages like coffee, tea, and juice. Nothing fancy, but perfectly fine for grabbing something quick before heading out. Their dinner service is limited to a 4–6pm window, which was disappointing, as I would have preferred more substantial options than fruit and chips as an evening snack.

They had a small seating area with a limited number of tables, but it wasn’t an issue when I grabbed breakfast at 6:45am, as there was only one other guest there.

Takeaway

My stay at the Sheraton was brief but the hotel was exactly what I needed for a quick overnight stop. Its central downtown location, comfortable rooms, and reliable amenities make it a solid choice for both business and leisure travellers.

The main drawback was the food and club lounge, which offered limited options and narrow service hours. For Elite status members, the value in that area may feel lacking. Fortunately, the hotel is surrounded by plenty of restaurants and cafés, making it easy to find great alternatives just steps away.
