Earlier this year, ITA Airways was announced as Aeroplan’s newest airline partner, with a codeshare agreement across the Atlantic. As of today, you can redeem Aeroplan points for ITA Airways.

A strong addition to Aeroplan’s existing 50+ partners, ITA Airways will allow Canadians to travel to Italy and beyond.

Aeroplan points accrual, Status Qualifying Credit (SQC) earn, and status benefits with ITA are not yet available and will take effect once ITA joins Star Alliance (expected early 2026).

To South America, ITA operates to:

  • Rio de Janeiro
  • Sao Paulo
  • Buenos Aires

To the Middle East and Africa:

  • Dakar
  • Accra
  • Mauritius
  • Cairo
  • Tel Aviv
  • Riyadh
  • Dubai

Finally, to Asia, ITA flies to:

  • Maldives
  • New Delhi
  • Bangkok
  • Tokyo

While not the most extensive, ITA Airways offers a respectable list of international destinations, and it’s interesting that Tokyo is its sole destination in East Asia.

You can redeem Aeroplan points on ITA Airways from North America to any of ITA’s destinations, except that you cannot redeem on ITA Airways when flying from North America to South America because Aeroplan does not allow redemptions between North America and South Africa with a layover in Europe.

Redeeming Aeroplan Points on ITA Airways

When redeeming on ITA Airways from North America, prices will be based on the “Between North America and Atlantic zone” award chart.

Aeroplan Atlantic Zone chart

A direct flight from Toronto to Rome costs 70,000 points one-way in business class, while longer flights, such as from Los Angeles, cost 90,000 points for the same.

Of course, you can add connecting flights on Air Canada or any of Aeroplan’s other partners, and the number of Aeroplan points required will increase if the total distance is in a different distance band.

ITA distances on GCMap

You can fly ITA onward to Africa, the Middle East, and East Asia, and pricing will follow the respective Aeroplan zone and distance. For example, flying Toronto – Rome – Tokyo (HND) will cost 87,500 Aeroplan points one-way in business class per the“Between North America and Pacific zones” reward chart.

At the moment, I haven’t been able to find any business class award space on ITA Airways’ long-haul routes, but I did find business class on shorter flights, such as to Cairo.

ITA Airways on Aeroplan

As it is a new redemption partner, ITA Airways may not be releasing long-haul business class award space to Aeroplan, but I expect to see it soon.

ITA Airways Business Class

ITA Airways operates two different aircraft as part of its long-haul fleet: the Airbus A330-900neo and the Airbus A350-900.

Both feature good business class products as the A339 has a Vantage XL product similar to Delta and Virgin Atlantic, but without a door. The A350 has reverse-herringbone seats, identical to those Air Canada uses. If you’re being picky, the A339 hard product is ITA’s latest and greatest.

While the Airbus A321neo is not a wide-body aircraft, ITA Airways follows the industry trend of installing lie-flat seats in a 1-1 configuration with reverse-herringbone seats. These fly within Europe, to West Africa, the Caucasus, and the Middle East.

ITA’s business class product is well reviewed online, and I’m very excited to experience it for myself. We’ll see whether the soft product makes up for the lack of sliding doors (I am firmly in the “flimsy doors in business class are still good” camp, but that is a discussion for another day).

Take Away

Aeroplan adds ITA Airways as its latest redemption partner, while SQC and other status benefits will have to wait until ITA Airways joins Star Alliance.

Aeroplan already has more airline redemption partners than any other frequent flyer program in the world, and ITA Airways is a very strong addition to the list, providing connectivity across the Atlantic and beyond.
