Air Canada and United Airlines have announced another round of transborder network expansion for Summer 2027, adding six new nonstop routes between Canada and the United States, alongside increased capacity on several existing routes.

The announcement includes three new Air Canada routes from Toronto, Montréal and Edmonton, while United Airlines is adding service from its Denver and Newark hubs to Ottawa, Québec City and St. John’s. For Canadian travellers, better access to major United hubs could mean more Aeroplan or United award bookings. Cities such as Ottawa, Québec City and St. John’s will gain new nonstop options that also open up connections across United’s wider network.

Here’s a closer look at the new routes, launch dates, flight schedules and aircraft details announced so far.

Air Canada: Three New Routes to the U.S. for Summer 2027

Air Canada will introduce new seasonal services between Toronto and Louisville, Montréal and Indianapolis, and Edmonton and Newark.

The routes will launch between late April and early June 2027, with operating periods extending into September or October depending on the destination.

New Air Canada route Launch date Frequency Seasonal end
Toronto (YYZ)–Louisville (SDF) April 28, 2027 Up to daily October 31, 2027
Montréal (YUL)–Indianapolis (IND) June 1, 2027 Daily September 30, 2027
Edmonton (YEG)–Newark (EWR) June 1, 2027 4 weekly October 17, 2027

Toronto–Louisville: New Seasonal Service Starting April 28, 2027

The service begins April 28, 2027, operating up to daily, with flights scheduled through October 31, 2027. Air Canada says the route will initially operate at reduced frequency before increasing to daily service in May.

Flight Route Departure Arrival
AC8561 Toronto–Louisville 14:00 15:35
AC8562 Louisville–Toronto 16:10 17:37

All times are local. Schedule subject to change.

Montréal–Indianapolis: Daily Flights Starting June 1, 2027

The new service will operate from June 1 through September 30, 2027, covering the peak summer travel season.

Flight Route Departure Arrival
AC8563 Montréal–Indianapolis 17:00 19:31
AC8564 Indianapolis–Montréal 14:00 16:10

All times are local. Schedule subject to change.

Indianapolis already has nonstop service to Toronto, so this new Montréal connection adds another Canadian gateway for travellers heading to Indiana. The daily frequency offers more flexibility than routes that operate only two or three times weekly. For travellers based in Montréal and eastern Canada, it also eliminates the need to connect through Toronto or a U.S. hub to reach Indianapolis.

Edmonton–Newark: Four Weekly Flights Starting June 1, 2027

Beginning June 1, 2027, Air Canada will introduce four weekly nonstop flights between Edmonton International Airport (YEG) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). The service will operate through October 17, 2027.

Flight Route Departure Arrival
AC1562 Edmonton–Newark 06:00 12:23
AC1563 Newark–Edmonton 13:20 16:33

All times are local. Schedule subject to change.

Newark is one of United’s largest hubs, with an extensive domestic network and international service across Europe and other regions. For Edmonton-based travellers, this route offers another way to reach the U.S. East Coast without connecting through Toronto, Montréal, or another Canadian gateway.

United Airlines: Three New Routes to Canada

United Airlines is contributing another three routes to the Summer 2027 expansion, including two new services from Denver and one from Newark.

New United route Planned launch Service details
Newark (EWR)–St. John’s (YYT) Summer 2027 Seasonal
Denver (DEN)–Ottawa (YOW) Summer 2027 New nonstop
Denver (DEN)–Québec City (YQB) Summer 2027 New nonstop

Unlike the three Air Canada additions, United announced its new routes without specific launch dates, frequencies, or flight numbers, so we will keep an eye out for more details and add them to this post as soon as they’re available.

New UA routes to Canada for 2027

Ottawa–Denver: New Nonstop Link to the Western U.S.

United’s new nonstop service between Ottawa (YOW) and Denver (DEN) is one of my standout additions. Ottawa already has United connections to major eastern U.S. hubs like IAD, ORD, and EWR, and Denver now adds direct access to a hub with a particularly strong western U.S. network, including Colorado, Utah, Arizona, California, and other destinations. Denver could remove the need to backtrack through Toronto, Chicago or another connecting airport.

The route also adds another Star Alliance option for travellers connecting beyond Denver. As an Ottawa-based traveller myself, I particularly appreciate new routes that allow us to start international journeys directly from YOW rather than automatically routing through Toronto or Montréal.

Québec City–Denver

Denver gives passengers access to United’s substantial western U.S. network, offering another routing option that doesn’t require a connection through Montréal, Toronto, or a U.S. East Coast hub. The new Denver service also complements United’s existing connections from Québec City to Chicago and Washington Dulles.

Newark–St. John’s: United Returns to Newfoundland

United is bringing back nonstop service between Newark (EWR) and St. John’s (YYT) for Summer 2027. The route marks the return of United-operated nonstop service between St. John’s and Newark after more than a decade-long absence.

It also offers another option for United States travellers visiting Newfoundland, potentially making St. John’s more accessible through United’s Newark hub.

Additional Capacity on Existing Canada–U.S. Routes

Beyond the six new routes, Air Canada and United have also confirmed changes to three existing transborder markets.

Route Airline Summer 2027 change
Edmonton–San Francisco Air Canada Larger Airbus A220 aircraft
Québec City–Washington Dulles United Increased service to five weekly flights
Winnipeg–Denver United 65% increase in daily seat capacity

What stands out to me is the focus on Canadian airports outside the country’s three largest airline hubs. Air Canada is adding Louisville from Toronto and Indianapolis from Montréal, but the more interesting developments may be the additional U.S. hub connections from Edmonton, Ottawa, Québec City and St. John’s. These announcements complement Air Canada’s recent Summer 2027 route and expansion plans, as well as United’s expansion into 10 new international cities in 2027.

For those of us who regularly start our journeys from smaller Canadian gateways, more nonstop options and better connections are always welcome.
