Oh Air India! They always find a way to hit the headlines, for all the wrong reasons. Unfortunately, this time it’s a cockroach in Air India inflight meal, while flying from Hyderabad to Chicago (via New Delhi).

And of course AI management has taken a note of the incident and opened an inquiry into the matter. In fact they tweeted back (grammar police was having a field day too);

What does “Obligatory action” even mean in this case? An incident report to the catering company? To be completely fair to Air India, it is extremely difficult to monitor a catering company  and their operations in entirety. And its hard to determine if these lapses happen on site at the catering company or in Air India flights/storage.

Take Away

Air India does offer a significant price value and a good economy product with 33″ seat pitch onboard. And sometimes vegetarian meals contain lizard/cockroach protein 😉 . A quick google search comes up with plethora of shockers pertaining Air India inflight meals. They just can’t seem to shed their reputation, and in my opinion seriously lag the competition in ground operations and customer service. Personally, it gets worse for me – am booked to fly them DXB-BOM-DXB over new years!!

Whats your take on this latest headliner from Air India?

Thats horrible. Unfortunately Air India takes the blame for their suppliers as they should. Air India used to be considered the best airline in the world in the 60s and 70s, still good in the 80s, then floundered after that. Last 10 years have picked up again. I have flown them over 30 years and always had a great experience, but will gingerly open my food the next time I use them, probably in 2 weeks. Good catch on the role of caterer TajSATS who, as you mention, are a bluechip company in their field. Bizarre.
