In February 2020, a ZDNet exclusive reported that personal details of 10.6 million users who stayed at MGM Resorts hotels had been published on a hacking forum. An MGM spokesperson confirmed to ZDNet that the data published was indeed that obtained from the MGM data breach in 2019, that had compromised data of roughly 500 Million hotel guests. Last week (June, 2020) several MGM members reported receiving an email from MGM international notifying them of the data breach, and a code to activate one-year subscription to Equifax Complete Premier Plan.

If you don’t recall getting this email as an MGM member, I suggest you search your inbox and spam folder for ‘Notice of Data Security Issue’. I found my email in spam folder, possibly because the email came from a generic inbox – Customer Response CustomerResponse@mgmresorts.com

According to the email from MGM International, an unauthorized party had accessed and downloaded MGM Resorts guest data from an external cloud server. The affected information may have included names, contact information (such as postal addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers), and dates of birth. The specific data affected differed for each impacted individual. The email also confirms that MGM International was providing members with credit monitoring services for one year at no cost, and includes a unique Activation Code for the Equifax Complete Premier PlanThis plan from Equifax retails at $19.95/month and includes the following features (US);

    • 3-bureau credit file monitoring
    • Equifax 3-bureau credit scores and report
    • Equifax credit score and report
    • Equifax credit score monitoring
    • Automatic fraud alerts
    • Internet scanning
    • Financial alerts
    • Equifax credit report lock
    • Lost wallet assistance
    • Up to $1MM in identity theft insurance

I was able to use the code and complete a simple signup procedure, my Canadian Equifax Complete Premiere account was active right away. No credit card is required for enrollment. The code can be used until September 30, 2020 and will not work after this date.

For my Canadian readers, I had reported Desjardins bank offer Equifax credit monitoring for 5 years last week. Desjardins offer was for a basic Equifax plan for 5 years, and the code could be activated until March 31, 2021. MGM’s offer to the Equifax Complete Premiere plan is far superior and if you received both offers as I did, signup for the MGM offer right away, for a full year, and activate Desjardin’s code only on March 31, 2021.
