Montreal-Trudeau airport (YUL) has adopted a furry solution to calm the nerves of flyers, a YUL Pet Squad, comprising of 30 dogs! While a canine unit is usually associated with detecting contraband, this squad is all about cuddles. The pet squad along with volunteer handlers will patrol the domestic and the international terminals and are a step towards improving passenger experience at YUL.

If reading this is giving you anxiety, don’t worry, the dogs are trained to not approach passengers. While airlines have been cracking down on the use of support animals as flying companions, many airports have been adopting dogs, cats and even pigs to better airport experience .

Highlights of YUL Pet Squad initiative

  • The YUL Pet Squad is currently present in the international and domestic zones of the airport terminal.

  • Volunteers let passengers approach the dog, but never go to them in case they have allergies or a phobia.

  • The squad’s name is a nod to the canine unit managed by the Airport Patrol, known as the Canine Squad.

  • The caacQ coordinates and selects the dog handlers, ensuring that they meet ADM’s security criteria.

  • Pet owners/guardians are performing this activity on a volunteer basis.

  • Each volunteer has completed a two-hour training course and visited the site with their dog to assess its comfort level in an airport setting.
