RBC CashBack Preferred: Unlimited 3% Cash Back and $300 Bonus

We don’t talk about cash back cards much, so when we do, it’s either a major improvement, a fantastic sign-up bonus, or both. The RBC CashBack Preferred World Elite has introduced several improvements over the past month that are worth highlighting.

What’s Changing:

  • 3% cash back on groceries, dining, gas, EV charging, transit, rideshare, streaming and digital gaming
  • 1% cash back on everything else

• Starting December 2: redeem cash back on demand with a minimum redemption of just $1

Unlimited Cash Back With No Spending Caps

3% back on groceries, dining, gas, EV charging, transit, rideshare, streaming and digital gaming is a lot of categories, and while 3% might not sound market-leading, the real perk is unlimited cash back with no spending caps. If you’re a big spender in any of these categories, there’s a case for putting everything on your RBC card, knowing you’ll always get 3% back.

You can, of course, maximize by putting the first $X on a different card with a slightly higher earn rate and then switching to RBC once you reach the spending cap, but you’ll have to remember to do so, or you might end up earning less than just leaving everything on RBC to begin with.

On-Demand Redemptions With Just $1 Minimum

Note: on-demand redemptions with a low $1 minimum are not yet live and will roll out as of December 2. You can check your cash back balance anytime through Online Banking or on the RBC Mobile App.

It’s great to see on-demand redemptions with a minimum as low as $1, which is as good as it gets for redeeming your cash back. No waiting for a set dollar minimum or the one date a year your cash back gets automatically sent to your chequing.

Takeaway

The RBC CashBack Preferred World Elite is now a much stronger everyday card, with unlimited 3% cash back across a wide range of categories and the flexibility to redeem as little as $1 on demand. The new welcome offer of up to $300 in bonus cash back makes it particularly attractive right now.

While there is a $120 annual fee, I think this is a great option for higher spenders who value simplicity. Sometimes, avoiding the hassle of juggling multiple cards is worth more than squeezing out another percentage point in rewards.
