The Amex Platinum Card was first introduced in 1984 and has established itself as a symbol of prestige and a benchmark for premium credit cards. American Express has now unveiled the details of the 2025 card refresh for its U.S. Consumer and Business Platinum Cards. Both cards will see an increase in their annual fees to $895. However, this is offset by a significant set of new and enhanced benefits and credits, which I believe will far outweigh the increased cost for many users. New and existing cardholders can now choose a new limited-edition mirror card design, in addition to existing card designs. Let’s dive into the specifics of the new features for each card and what benefits remain the same.
U.S. Consumer Platinum Card®
The annual fee rises to $895. For existing members, the new fee takes effect January 2, 2026 (renewal date). The additions and expansions clearly target frequent travellers and lifestyle spenders, but the steep increase means only those who can reliably use multiple credits will maximize value.

Design Refresh
Alongside the benefits update, Amex introduced a limited-edition mirror design for both Consumer and Business Platinum members. Personally, I am not sure how I feel about this hyper-reflective look, which takes away from the traditional Platinum feel and gives it more of a glossy, novelty effect. I already carry a selfie camera in my pocket, so I don’t need my payment card doubling as another way to see my own reflection. Maybe I’m showing my age, but I continue to prefer the understated, classic Platinum aesthetic that has always signalled refinement without the distraction of a mirror finish.
Takeaway
The refresh signals a clear repositioning of the Platinum cards, moving deeper into the premium lifestyle and business space, justifying the higher fee through broader, more flexible credits across dining, fitness, entertainment, and business essentials. And it’s always good to see that there are no downgrades to the product’s core offering.
