Wow – Porter on a roll! Porter Airlines is entering a partnership with Montréal Saint-Hubert Airport (YHU) to develop a new terminal capable of serving over 4 million passengers annually. As part of the revitalization project, the airline will also introduce a Canada-wide network at the convenient YHU airport, while continuing to expand the existing operations at Montréal’s Trudeau Airport (YUL).

YHU is located in the Saint-Hubert borough of Longueuil, Quebec, ~17km from downtown Montreal, and ~35 km from YUL. The partnership with Porter will introduce a new passenger terminal, of which contruction is scheduled to begin in mid-2023 and a completion scheduled for late 2024. The new terminal will provide a second airport for Porter Airlines to serve the Montréal market.
More than 10 potential YHU routes have been initially identified, spanning from Vancouver in the west to St. John’s, N.L., in the east. The airline also intends to connect YHU with both of its Toronto hubs – Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ) and Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). Routes between Montreal and Toronto will be served with a combination of De Havilland Dash 8-400 and Embraer E195-E2 aircraft.
The YHU terminal development is modelled after the successful revitalization of Billy Bishop, and is being designed by Scott Associates Architects. The terminal overview as shared by Porter;

- Lounge-style seating for all passengers
- Food and beverage concessions, and retail vendors
- A Net-Zero facility with all building systems to fully operate on electric power
- State-of-the-art passenger and baggage processing, and security installations
Montréal Saint-Hubert Airport currently offers charter flights by a handful of operators. Most notably, Pascan Aviation, which currently operates regional flights within Quebec. Porter and Pascan intend to develop a codeshare partnership that facilitates seamless movement of passengers between their respective airlines, which will provide increased opportunities for travellers to move within the province of Québec and other regions of Canada.

Montreal is all set to get a second airport which will serve Porter flights across Canada. As Billy Bishop (YTZ) is to Toronto, I expect YHU to become an airport of choice for many passengers seeking easy access, and transit points from Montreal. If my experience on Porter’s inaugural flight from Vancouver to Toronto , or the new E195-E2 routes across Canada and US is anything to go by, Porter is well on its way to shake up the competition in Canada.
