WestJet is ramping up its Canadian domestic network for summer 2025, focusing on enhanced connectivity to its growing transatlantic services from Halifax (YHZ) and St. John’s (YYT). The airline’s latest network update includes launching three new domestic routes, returning a previously operated service, and increasing frequency on several existing routes. This expansion also comes when many Canadians are choosing to explore destinations within the country rather than travel abroad, particularly to the U.S., amid shifting travel priorities and border-related uncertainties.

New WestJet Routes – Boost East Coast Links to EU

Starting in late June and early July 2025, WestJet will introduce three new domestic routes and reinstate a previously operated service:

Route Frequency Start Date
Saskatoon – Halifax 1x weekly June 28, 2025
Regina – Halifax 1x weekly June 29, 2025
Vancouver – Halifax* 4x weekly July 1, 2025
Winnipeg – St. John’s 2x weekly July 1, 2025

*Vancouver–Halifax was previously served in 2024 and is being reinstated for summer 2025.

These new routes, including first-time non-stop connections between Halifax and the prairie cities of Saskatoon (YXE) and Regina (YQR), support growing domestic travel demand, especially from Canadians who prioritize regional vacations and family visits over international trips. WestJet will be the only airline serving YXE and YQR from Eastern Canada! The YVR-YHZ route also returns to meet coast-to-coast travel needs during peak summer demand and will directly compete with Air Canada’s seasonal route from YHZ.

In addition to new routes, WestJet is increasing flight frequencies on several existing domestic routes to better serve demand:

  • Winnipeg – Halifax: Up to 10x weekly

  • Edmonton – Halifax: Up to 13x weekly

  • Calgary – Deer Lake: Increased to 3x weekly

These schedule enhancements will improve options and flexibility for business and leisure travellers across provinces, responding directly to the shifting travel patterns of Canadians increasingly choosing domestic destinations.

New WestJet Routes – European Access

WestJet’s summer schedule will facilitate one-stop transatlantic travel from multiple Canadian regions. The expanded domestic schedule feeds into WestJet’s growing roster of direct flights from YHZ and YYT to Europe, which includes:

  • Barcelona

  • Paris

  • Amsterdam

  • Dublin

  • Edinburgh

  • London

These connections will enable travellers from Western and Central Canada to reach Europe with just one domestic stop, bypassing traditional gateways like Toronto or Montreal.

Takeaway

WestJet’s 2025 summer schedule is also a direct response to a larger trend: more Canadians are opting for domestic travel in light of ongoing cross-border uncertainties, currency fluctuations, and a renewed interest in domestic travel. This “Canada-first” travel mindset creates demand for routes that previously saw limited or seasonal service. By creating better domestic links and enabling seamless connections to Europe from the East Coast, the new WestJet routes are positioned to serve both leisure and international travellers while supporting regional growth and tourism.
