Air Canada continues to surprise me with its generous offers, towards not only earning miles but also maintaining loyalty. The latest promotion, aptly named ‘Travel at Home’, engages Aeroplan membership to earn Aeroplan Miles and Air Canada Altitude status towards future trips. This generous limited time offer allows members to reach Altitude Status through organic spend on Aeroplan credits cards, including Welcome Bonus from new cards, converting hotel and credit card points, shopping online via Aeroplan eStore and even Donating miles! Lets look at the details of Aeroplan Travel at Home promotion;

First things first, all members must register for the promotion, which runs from April 20 to May 31, 2020 . Here is the Registration Link . Through this promotion, members can achieve Air Canada Altitude status without flying the miles. The more Aeroplan miles you earn, the more bonuses you get, in addition to earning Air Canada Altitude status. Here is whats up for grabs;

  • Members that do not have Altitude Elite Status, can achieve Altitude Prestige 25K status valid through 2021 when they earn 50,000 Aeroplan Miles through everyday Travel at home activities (including miles earned via an Aeroplan-affiliated credit card)
  • Current Altitude elite members can earn towards their next status level – members earn more when they earn Aeroplan Miles, including Bonus Altitude Qualifying Miles (AQM) and the potential for a one-time Altitude status tier upgrade up to a maximum award of Elite 75K. Elite 75K and Super Elite 100K members who cross the 250,000 threshold will receive 25,000 Bonus Aeroplan Miles that will count towards Air Canada Million Mile recognition.

Now that we know the perks of this promotion, lets breakdown the ways to earn Aeroplan miles that will unlock these rewards. Four ways to earn at home;

  1. Convert hotel and credit card points
    All Aeroplan partners that allow you to convert the points into Aeroplan Miles will qualify towards the promotion. This is the easiest way to earn thousands of Aeroplan miles.
  2. Use an Aeroplan credit card
    Every Aeroplan mile earned when using Aeroplan branded credit card qualifies towards unlocking the perks of the promotion. This also includes Welcome Bonus earned from new credit card.
  3. Donate miles and receive Bonus Altitude Qualifying Miles
    From now through April 30, 2020, for every five Aeroplan Miles you donate to a charity fighting the COVID-19 crisis, you’ll receive one Bonus Altitude Qualifying Mile (AQM) – up to a maximum of 25,000 AQM
  4. Shop online via Aeroplan eStore
    Shop online via the 170+ brands on the Aeroplan eStore. There will be weekly bonuses released, this week’s featured offer includes 10x miles when you shop at Indigo via the Aeroplan eStore from now until April 26, 2020

Personal reflection

This is an extremely generous offer from Aeroplan. A simple conversion to 50,000 Aeroplan miles will earn all members Altitude Prestige 25K status valid through 2021. Prestige 25k brings with it perks like Priority Seat Selection, Priority Check-in, Complimentary checked baggage allowance, Priority Boarding (Zone 2), Two Maple Leaf Lounge Guest passes, 20 eUpgrade credits, and most importantly – waiver of fuel surcharges when redeeming Aeroplan miles for travel on Air Canada, within Canada and US. These 25k perks can be worth hundreds of dollars in value. Given how easy this will be to achieve, I expect most of the membership to now have this status, which means crowded lounges, longer priority check-in and Zone 2 boarding lineups.

For current Altitude Status holders, the requirement to earn 250,000 Aeroplan miles to earn a tier upgrade is steep, but manageable. This will be particularly appealing to members that can jump from 35K to 50K status, thus giving them Star Alliance Gold Status as well. No major incentives (other than easy Aeroplan miles and additional priority) for members to jump from 25k to 35k or from 50k to 75k. I am somewhat glad that Altitude 100k status continues to be exclusive and was left out of the promotion perks.

Glad to see Aeroplan and Air Canada continue to keep their membership engaged though these innovative and lucrative promotions. We will travel again, and Aeroplan Travel at Home promotion ensures that we will be better positioned to travel with some savings and prestige status in hand.
