Today is the last day for Aeroplan members to earn 10x Aeroplan Miles per $1 spent on any purchase at Air Canada using a Aeroplan affiliated credit card (Canada). Additionally, members will receive 15% off for all Economy, Premium Economy and Business Class base fares to all destinations Air Canada flies, when booking directly with Air Canada.  This is a good deal even for members that do not plan to use the purchased ticket, since it can be converted to Aeroplan miles with a 65% bonus, under the ‘Ready to Takeoff’ promotion, for an effective purchase rate of 1.49 CAD cents per mile.

Special Air Canada offer – 10x Aeroplan Miles

10x Aeroplan Miles

The offer is pretty straightforward, where members earn 10 more Aeroplan Miles per $1 spent on any purchase at Air Canada using a Aeroplan affiliated credit card (excluding Air Canada Vacations packages, car rentals, hotel bookings, and other third party partner products and services that can be purchased through aircanada.com). Only TD Aeroplan Cards include all purchases, including Air Canada Vacations packages, car rentals, hotel bookings, and other third party partner products and services that can be purchased through aircanada.com.

In addition to earning an additional 10x Aeroplan miles, members that book directly with Air Canada will also save 15% on all Economy, Premium Economy and Business Class base fares to all Air Canada destinations, when using promotional codes from CIBC, TD, and American Express.

List of Aeroplan affiliated cards that are part of this offer;

  • CIBC Aero Classic Visa* Card
  • CIBC Aero Platinum™ Visa* Card
  • CIBC Aerogold® Visa* Card
  • CIBC Aerogold® Visa Infinite* Card
  • CIBC Aerogold® Visa Infinite Privilege* Card
  • CIBC Aerogold® Visa* Card for Business
  • CIBC Aerogold® Visa* Card for Business Plus
  • TD® Aeroplan® Visa Platinum* Card
  • TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card
  • TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite Privilege* Card
  • TD® Aeroplan® Visa* Business Card
  • American Express AeroplanPlus Platinum Card
  • America Express AeroplanPlus Gold Card

For better illustration, if I purchased an Air Canada ticket worth $1000, using my CIBC Aerogold® Visa* Card for Business, which earns a base rate of 1.5x on Air Canada purchases, I would earn a total of 11,500 Aeroplan miles (1.5x+10x) through this offer.

Buying Aeroplan Miles at 1.49 CAD cents per mile

Aeroplan’s Ready to Take Off  promotion is still active, where travellers can make a one-time change without a fee for all new or existing bookings made through December 31, 2020 for original travel between March 1, 2020 and December 31, 2021. If you booked directly with Air Canada and you need to cancel for any reason, you can convert your ticket to an Air Canada Travel Voucher that has no expiry date or to Aeroplan Miles with an additional 65% bonus miles.

Recall my example above, of buying an Air Canada ticket worth $1000 (earning 11,500 miles), and let’s extend that example to convert the ticket to Aeroplan Miles. The standard rate at which Aeroplan sells its miles, is 3 cents. A 65% additional bonus effectively brings that rate down to 1.8 cents per mile. So if I convert $1000 into miles, with a 65% bonus, it gets me 55,555 miles ($1000/1.8). My total miles earned on this transaction would be 67,055 miles (11,500 + 55,555). A return of 67,055 miles on $1000 is a rate of 1.49 CAD cents per mile. Note that sales tax is applicable for Canadian residents when converting to miles, however, non-Canadians do not have to pay this tax.

1.49 CAD cents/mile is a great rate to purchase Aeroplan miles if you have a redemption plan in place, with the New Aeroplan Program coming on Nov 8, 2020.
