Lufthansa Group has announced its largest international route expansion since 2020, and Canada is getting some welcome attention. The biggest news for Canadian travellers is a new nonstop flight between Edmonton and Frankfurt, while Montréal YUL will see additional Lufthansa frequencies next summer.
South of the border, Lufthansa is adding two interesting destinations to its network: Columbus, Ohio, and Phoenix, Arizona. The airline is also changing operations on certain U.S. routes, including Seattle.
For Canadians, I find the addition of Edmonton particularly interesting. Lufthansa Group already has a fairly extensive network connecting Canada with Germany through its Frankfurt and Munich hubs. Adding another Canadian city to that network creates more options for travellers heading to Europe and beyond, without having to connect through Toronto, Montréal, or Vancouver first.
And, of course, with Lufthansa expanding its Allegris cabins and SWISS introducing Senses, we also have to ask which premium cabin products we can expect on these flights, and whether we can book them with Aeroplan points. Let’s take a closer look at what’s coming in 2027.
Lufthansa Group: New Canada and US Routes for Summer 2027
The new Lufthansa Group summer schedule becomes bookable from October 20, 2026, with services rolling out between March and August 2027. Here are the key North American developments:
| Route | Airline | Start date | Frequency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frankfurt–Edmonton (YEG) | Discover Airlines | June 1, 2027 | 3 weekly |
| Frankfurt–Montréal (YUL) | Lufthansa | Summer 2027 | Increased service |
| Frankfurt–Columbus (CMH) | Lufthansa | May 5, 2027 | 3 weekly |
| Munich–Phoenix (PHX) | Lufthansa | August 3, 2027 | 3 weekly |
| Munich–Chicago (ORD) | Lufthansa | Summer 2027 | Increased service |
| Frankfurt/Munich–Seattle (SEA) | Discover Airlines | Late March 2027 | Takes over existing LH flights |

Discover Airlines Adds Edmonton–Frankfurt Nonstop Flights
Starting June 1, 2027, Discover Airlines will launch nonstop flights between Frankfurt (FRA) and Edmonton (YEG), operating three times weekly from Frankfurt on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The new service will make Discover Airlines the only airline operating nonstop between Edmonton and Germany.
For those unfamiliar with Discover Airlines, it is Lufthansa Group’s leisure-focused airline, operating long-haul flights from Frankfurt and Munich. It sells flights through the Lufthansa booking platform, making it easy to connect onward across the group’s wider European network. Discover already serves Calgary and Halifax, so Edmonton becomes its third Canadian destination.
Discover’s New Ocean Blue Cabins Are Coming in 2027
One interesting development worth watching is Discover Airlines’ upcoming cabin renewal. The airline operates Airbus A330-300 aircraft on its long-haul network and plans to begin introducing its new Ocean Blue cabins in April 2027. The refreshed interiors will include:
- A new Business Class cabin with direct aisle access from every seat.
- Two front-row Business Suites with sliding doors.
- An upgraded Premium Economy cabin with hard-shell seats.
- Larger entertainment screens and improved connectivity.

Discover Airlines New Business Class Cabin
All 16 A330 aircraft are scheduled to receive the new cabin by mid-2028.
This means Edmonton could eventually benefit from a significantly improved onboard product. However, with the retrofit beginning only two months before Edmonton service launches, I wouldn’t assume the inaugural flights will feature the new interior. Unlike Lufthansa Allegris, Ocean Blue is a separate product designed for Discover’s long-haul aircraft.
Lufthansa Increases Montréal–Frankfurt Frequencies
Lufthansa has confirmed additional flights between Frankfurt and Montréal, although the announcement does not specify the exact increase in weekly frequencies.
Montréal already enjoys nonstop flights to both Frankfurt and Munich with Lufthansa. SWISS also serves Zurich, and Austrian Airlines serves Vienna.
The Frankfurt route has also featured Lufthansa’s newer Boeing 787-9 with Allegris Business Class during 2026. Hopefully, additional capacity will create more opportunities to experience that cabin in 2027, although the aircraft assignment for the expanded schedule is still TBC.
Existing Nonstop Routes Between Canada and Germany
With Edmonton joining the network, it is worth putting Lufthansa Group’s Canadian presence into perspective. The following routes provide a useful overview of Lufthansa Group’s direct Canada–Germany connections, including the announced 2027 addition.
| Canadian airport | German destination | Airline |
|---|---|---|
| Toronto (YYZ) | Frankfurt, Munich | Lufthansa |
| Montréal (YUL) | Frankfurt, Munich | Lufthansa |
| Vancouver (YVR) | Frankfurt, Munich | Lufthansa |
| Calgary (YYC) | Frankfurt, Munich | Discover Airlines |
| Halifax (YHZ) | Frankfurt | Discover Airlines |
| Edmonton (YEG) | Frankfurt | Discover Airlines — new June 2027 |
Route availability and frequencies vary by season. Not every route operates daily or year-round.
Beyond Germany, Lufthansa Group airlines also connect Canada with Zurich and Vienna. Air Canada adds further transatlantic options through its partnership with Lufthansa, including its own services to Frankfurt.
Lufthansa Adds Columbus and Phoenix to Its US Network
South of the border, Lufthansa is adding two new nonstop routes: Frankfurt–Columbus (CMH) starting May 5, 2027, and Munich–Phoenix (PHX) starting August 3, 2027. Both will operate three times weekly, with Columbus receiving the Boeing 787-9 featuring Lufthansa’s newer Allegris Business Class, while Phoenix will be served by the Airbus A350-900.
Lufthansa will also increase frequencies between Munich and Chicago (ORD). Meanwhile, Discover Airlines will take over Lufthansa’s existing Frankfurt–Seattle and Munich–Seattle flights from late March 2027, bringing its Airbus A330 product to both routes.
For Aeroplan members, the Columbus route can be another opportunity to experience Allegris using points, provided Lufthansa releases partner award inventory. As always, check the aircraft and operating airline before booking, especially with several different premium cabin products across Lufthansa Group.
Takeaway
I am encouraged to see Lufthansa Group adding more capacity across Canada rather than concentrating everything in Toronto and Montréal. Edmonton–Frankfurt is an exciting new Canadian route in this announcement. The additional Montréal capacity is also welcome, particularly as Lufthansa continues to introduce newer widebody aircraft and premium cabins.
For U.S. travellers, Columbus and Phoenix are interesting additions, with Columbus confirmed to receive the Boeing 787-9 featuring Allegris.
From a points perspective, though, additional flights don’t automatically translate into more Aeroplan award availability. Lufthansa’s 2026 restrictions on premium partner awards remind us that more capacity and more bookable award seats are two very different things.

Again, Ottawa does not make the cut for another international route. Too close to YUL and YYZ again?
It’s high time that airport adds non *A carriers such as KLM, BA or SAS.
