Porter Airlines is set to become the launch carrier at the newly developed Montreal Metropolitan Airport (YHU). Beginning June 15, the airline will introduce 12 nonstop routes across Canada, establishing YHU as a new operational base alongside its existing presence at Montreal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL).

The new Montreal Metropolitan Airport is located in Longueuil on Montreal’s South Shore, within close reach of the metropolitan population and is 30 minutes from downtown.

Porter’s initial rollout at YHU includes 12 coast-to-coast routes launching within the first week of operations. This network positions Montreal as a central connecting point within Porter’s broader domestic strategy. The airline plans to operate up to 244 weekly departures across the Montreal region during peak summer, with 138 flights from YHU and 106 continuing from YUL. This represents a 91% increase in Porter’s summer capacity in Montreal, driven in part by the addition of six new nonstop destinations. One Porter executive explained YHU as Billy Bishop Airport (Toronto Island Airport) on Steroids 🙂

The dual-airport strategy will allow Porter to distribute capacity across both YHU and YUL, giving passengers additional options when selecting departure points and itineraries. Operations at YHU will be supported by a mixed fleet consisting of the De Havilland Dash 8-400 and the Embraer E195-E2. The latter has been central to Porter’s recent expansion, with 52 aircraft added over the past three years. The E195-E2 has enabled the airline to extend its reach beyond short-haul markets into transcontinental routes within Canada and into the United States, as well as leisure destinations in Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. And if you plan to redeem VIPorter points, remember that the airline just instituted a temporary Peak Fuel Surcharge on all award tickets.

With 12 routes launching immediately and a growing network supported by fleet expansion and regional partnerships, YHU is expected to become an increasingly relevant part of Montreal’s aviation landscape.
