American Airlines is undertaking a broad initiative to modernize and elevate the experience of its regional fleet. With the largest regional fleet of any U.S. carrier, the airline is investing in both physical upgrades and service adjustments to bring regional flying in line with what travellers experience on its mainline routes. This phased project will unfold over the next several years, introducing a more consistent standard of comfort, connectivity, and onboard service across the network.
Connectivity on Regional Flights
One of the most significant changes is the extension of high-speed satellite Wi-Fi across the dual-class regional fleet. The airline confirms that nearly 300 regional aircraft are already equipped with gate-to-gate Wi-Fi, and the rollout will continue until the entire fleet is upgraded by early 2026. By January 2026, AAdvantage® members will also be able to access complimentary Wi-Fi on these flights.
Updated Cabin Interiors
Passengers boarding new Embraer 175 and Bombardier CRJ900 aircraft will experience a cabin design that closely mirrors those of American’s mainline fleet. The airline is standardizing its look and feel with refreshed seat coverings, clean modern designs, and in-seat power across all seats. The initial rollout of refreshed interiors is scheduled to begin on newly delivered Embraer 175 and CRJ900 aircraft in Fall 2025.

This approach will not be limited to new deliveries. Over the coming years, American plans to retrofit existing CRJ700, CRJ900, E170, and E175 aircraft to match the updated design.
Another element of the regional fleet upgrade program is focused on carry-on baggage. American is collaborating with Embraer to design and deliver larger overhead bins for the larger regional jets. Aircraft with these larger bins will be phased in over the coming years.
Consistent Service and Loyalty Integration
Alongside the physical upgrades, American is also aligning its service model across mainline and regional flights. Snack offerings have been standardized, with premium cabin customers now receiving a midday snack basket in addition to the morning and evening selections. AAdvantage® members can now redeem for in-flight purchases on all flights, including regional services.
Takeaway
American Airlines is committing to a more consistent and customer-focused regional operation by integrating modern interiors, high-speed connectivity, expanded loyalty benefits, and enhanced onboard service. The upgrades, planned through 2026 and beyond, will reduce the gap between regional and mainline flying.
