Tomorrow is the last day for the targeted points purchase promotion from Marriott Bonvoy. Marriott special bonus promotion includes 40-50% bonus, when you buy or gift 2,000+ points, through March 22, 2021. My accounts were targeted with the 50% bonus, which translates to 0.83 cents per point (CPP). The purchase limit has been doubled for this promotion, so I was able to purchase 150,000 (bonus incl.) Bonvoy points for $1250 USD.

With 50% bonus, the purchase rate is 0.83 CPP, whereas with a 40% bonus, the rates dips to 0.89 CPP. In many ways, 0.83 CPP is a regular promotion from Marriott, November 2020 being an exception where Bonvoy points were sold for as low as 0.78 CPP. Given that I redeem mostly at mid-tier Marriott properties, I value Marriott Bonvoy points at 0.7 cents a piece. A quick reminder that Marriott Bonvoy allows points advance booking (up to 5) – earn or purchase the needed points at least 14 days prior to check-in.

However, my plan of action with the purchased points is to convert Bonvoy Points to airline miles at 3:1. Bonvoy adds a 5k bonus on every 60,000 points converted, equaling 25K airline miles for every 60k transferred. Converting 180,000 points from my Bonvoy account to Aeroplan, or Alaska MileagePlan would net me 75,000 miles. Leaning towards converting it all to Aeroplan simply to leverage my Aeroplan Priority Rewards, where I can redeem for Worldwide Business Cabin awards with a 50% discount (Super Elite 100k benefit). With priority rewards factored in, the 75,000 miles should be ~enough for a return trip in Business Class cabin, to most places around the globe – an excellent use of the $1250 USD spent on purchasing Bonvoy points, imo.

If you decide to purchase bonvoy points through this promotion, note that the transaction is processed through points.com and will not count as a hotel/travel transaction. Best to use a credit card that gives you a good return on non-bonus category spends.
