Neo is making a huge overhaul to its entire cashback credit card stack with a new three-plan structure for both the Neo World Mastercard and Neo World Elite Mastercard.

Each card will now offer three distinct versions, each focused on a specific spending type, with the version selected at the time of application.

The idea is simple: pick the card that best matches how you already spend.

All About the Neo World & World Elite Mastercard

The new lineup splits into two tiers:

  • Neo World® Mastercard ($0 annual fee)
  • Neo World Elite® Mastercard ($149 annual fee)

Each tier is then offered in three plans:

  • Gas & Grocery
  • Shop & Dine
  • Everywhere

That brings the total to six versions of the card, each with its own earning structure. All are available as a secure card as well. Customers can hold one World Elite or one World card at a time.

The Neo World Elite Mastercard requires $80,000 in personal or $150,000 in household income, while the Neo World Mastercard requires $50,000 in personal or $80,000 in household income.

Gas & Grocery

The Gas & Grocery plan focuses on everyday essentials: groceries, gas, and recurring bills. This version matches the previous offering; however, the annual fee has increased from $125 to $149.

  • 5% on groceries
  • 4% on recurring payments
  • 3% on gas
  • 1% on everything else

At the high end, the 5% grocery earn rate matches that of the BMO CashBack World Elite Mastercard, but with a $1,000 monthly spending cap, double that of BMO’s $500.

The 4% return on recurring payments is higher than the 2% offered by cards like BMO and CIBC, and matches the Scotiabank Momentum Visa Infinite rate without having a combined category spending cap.

The spending cap for recurring payments and gas is $500 and $1,000 per month, with all transactions earning the base cashback rate of 1% thereafter.

  • 2% on gas, groceries, and recurring payments
  • 0.5% on everything else

On the no-fee side, the Neo World Mastercard stands out compared to cards like the MBNA Smart Cash World Mastercard, which applies the same earn rate, but with a lower $500 monthly cap and charges a $39 annual fee.

The $0 Neo World tier is uniquely competitive for value-conscious customers, as no comparable Canadian card offers 2% on gas, groceries, and recurring payments without an annual fee. The spend cap is reasonable $1,000 on groceries, $1,000 in gas & EV, and $500 on recurring payments.

Shop & Dine

The Shop & Dine plan shifts the focus to dining and retail spending.

  • 5% on food & drink
  • 3% on shopping
  • 1% on everything else

Dining and retail are categories where many cashback cards earn around 1%, making the 5% and 3% rates here a clear step up.

Even compared to more targeted competitors, Neo maintains an edge. The 5% earn rate on dining is higher than the 4% offered by the Simplii Financial Cash Back Visa, while the 3% return on shopping exceeds the 1% offered by cards like the CIBC Dividend Visa Infinite and Desjardins Cash Back World Elite Mastercard.

The spending cap is $1,000 on each elevated category.

  • 2% on food & drink
  • 2% on shopping
  • 0.5% on everything else

This compares favourably to cards like the CIBC Dividend Visa Infinite, where dining typically earns 2% and retail purchases earn 1%, compared to 5% and 3% respectively on the Neo World Elite Mastercard. It’s also materially better than the Desjardins Cash Back World Elite, a strong dining-category competitor, which earns 3% on restaurant purchases and 1% on retail purchases.

Shopping includes a broad range of retail categories like apparel, electronics, and home goods, although Amazon and wholesale purchases are excluded.

For those who spend heavily on dining and retail and want to earn cashback, this plan concentrates rewards in categories that are often underrepresented elsewhere. The spend cap is $500 per elevated category.

Everywhere

The Everywhere plan keeps things simple with a flat cashback rate.

  • 2% on all purchases

Flat-rate cards are typically anchored around 1% to 1.5%, with the RBC Cash Back Preferred World Elite Mastercard offering 1.5% as a reference point.

At 2%, Neo’s flat rate exceeds that benchmark, while also matching cards that offer 2% only under more specific conditions, such as requiring a telecom relationship. There’s a generous spending cap of $4,000 a month before earning drops to 1%.

  • 1% on all purchases

At first glance, 1% looks standard, but consistency is the main appeal here.

Some cashback cards drop to 0.5% outside of bonus categories, including the Tangerine Money-Back Mastercard, when purchases fall outside selected categories. A flat 1% across all spending removes that variability, and keep in mind the Neo World Mastercard charges no annual fee.

There are no categories to track and no caps on the base earn rate, making this the most straightforward option in the lineup.

Redeeming Rewards

Across all plans, cardholders have access to Neo’s partner network of 10,000+ merchants, where offers can deliver up to 15% cashback.

Cashback is earned on eligible purchases and deposited instantly into the Neo Rewards Wallet, with no minimum redemption threshold and no expiry.

For category-based plans, monthly caps apply to bonus categories. After hitting the cap, purchases earn the base rate (0.5% on World, 1% on World Elite) for the rest of the month.

Partner cashback can stack on top of base earn rates, depending on the offer, which can further increase returns at participating merchants.

The Neo World Elite Mastercard also includes comprehensive travel insurance, auto rental collision/loss, and access to the Mastercard Travel Pass (DragonPass) with pay-per-visit lounge access.

Takeaway

Neo’s new three-plan structure takes a more focused approach to cashback, separating earning into distinct card versions rather than combining everything into one.

Each plan is built around a specific type of spending, with strong earn rates in its respective categories, giving applicants a clearer choice depending on how they spend.
