United just launched a new status match campaign, and I would call it aggressive. Directly targeted at Delta and American Elite members, United’s slogan is “Don’t keep buffering: switch to United and get the fastest Wi-Fi in the sky.”
At a Glance
Until October 15, U.S. residents can complete a form and upload proof of their Delta SkyMiles or American AAdvantage status, and within 3 business days, they’ll have matched Premier status for 90 days.
The only requirement is spending the required amount on United or United Express flights and actually flying them within 90 days. Complete the challenge, and you’ll keep your status until January 31, 2028 — basically a whole two years.
Full Details
Below are the statuses eligible for matching and the equivalent United status it’s mapped to.
| United Status for Match | Spending Required | Matching Delta status | Matching American status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premier Silver | $1,500 | Silver Medallion | AAdvantage Gold |
| Premier Gold | $3,000 | Gold Medallion | AAdvantage Platinum |
| Premier Platinum | $4,500 | Platinum Medallion | AAdvantage Platinum Pro |
| Premier 1K | $7,000 | Diamond Medallion | AAdvantage Executive Platinum |
The only requirement is to spend the minimum required on United or United Express tickets and complete all flights within 90 days.
The base fare and surcharges count. On Money + Miles tickets, the cash portion counts. As usual, government taxes and ancillary purchases do not count. It’s important that you must fly all flights within 90 days as tickets purchased for more than 90 days away do not qualify.
There is no flight segments requirement. All earned and lifetime status qualify, while temporary American or Delta status does not.
Finally, Premier Platinum members will receive 20 PlusPoints and Premier 1K members will receive 100 PlusPoints after you complete the challenge, which is less than the full allotment of 40 and 280.
That’s it — it’s really as straightforward as it sounds. Just remember to submit your status match request before you start booking flights.

United’s latest status match offer
Note: United does offer a separate status match on an ongoing basis that accepts status from airlines all around the world and has a Premier qualifying flights (PQF) and Premier qualifying points (PQP) requirement. Depending on your goals, this could actually be easier because credit card spend counts towards PQP.
Complete the Challenge Efficiently
No hacks needed here: if you’re completing the challenge specifically for status, the goal is simply to hit the required spend with as few flights as possible. Unlike United’s regular status match, there’s no reason to add unnecessary segments.
The Context
The slogan feels like a targeted attack towards Delta, after Delta refused Starlink and signed with Amazon Leo. There’s a few more details, but the key takeaway is that United will have equipped its entire fleet with Starlink before Delta even installs Amazon Leo on the first plane.
United says Starlink is already available on about 46% of its daily flights, with 5.4 million passengers using it in September alone.
It’s particularly poignant that United calls this status match “our most flexible and straightforward status match yet”.
Starlink Really Is That Good
If this isn’t the most direct way United has tried to steal Elite members, I don’t know what is. Really, the only requirement here is spending a certain amount with United and taking the flights within 90 days.
Delta had choice words regarding Elon Musk, but it’s hard to ignore just how good Starlink is in the sky. Starlink may not be widespread yet, but airlines are installing it at breakneck speed. My take is that it will be enough to sway passengers to choose one airline over another, because the difference is like comparing dial-up to fibre-optic internet.

At the end of the day, many passengers are hub-captive, and Atlanta-based frequent flyers have no reason to switch to United when Delta offers more direct flights and a better schedule.
If you live in a competitive airport and can imagine switching all your flights to United in the next two years, then it may be worth it. Remember, you need to keep flying United and Star Alliance to get good use out of your newly acquired airline status.
Takeaway
United’s latest status match is unusually straightforward and generous, particularly since completing the challenge gives you status through January 2028. If you already hold Delta or American status and live somewhere where switching your flying to United is realistic, this is a compelling opportunity to jump ship.
But airline status is only valuable if you’ll actually use it. I wouldn’t go out of my way to spend thousands of dollars with United just to complete the challenge, especially if Delta or American offers better routes and schedules where you live. For someone who genuinely has a choice, though, United is making a pretty aggressive case for your business.
